The drive from Tallahassee is roughly 54 miles and typically takes a little over an hour. The nearest large commercial airport is in Tallahassee, about 48 miles to the northeast, serving as the main gateway for regional air travel.

Carrabelle Beach fronts St. George Sound, and the surrounding waters support boating and Gulf fishing. The Crooked River Lighthouse, built in 1895, can be climbed for views over the sound, river, and marshes, with a keeper's-house museum at its base. Other draws include the Carrabelle History Museum, the Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum, and the World's Smallest Police Station, with St. George Island and Apalachicola a short drive away.
